Meaning:
సద్గురువు చేసిన ఆనందకరమైన మనోబోధనల వలన, దయ వలన, నా మనసులో బ్రహ్మం గోచరించింది. చాలా సుఖమైనది, నిర్మలమైనది, ఆశలను, పాశాలను నిర్మూలించేది, స్వయంప్రకాశమైనది, అఖిలాధారమయినది అయిన బ్రహ్మము!
Sri Sadashiva Brahmendra is a yogi who had realized the "Brahmam" or the Infinite Spirit (God) in his meditation. His songs are sweet and this one resonates with the authenticity of his experience with the Infinite. In this song, he says that thanks to the teachings and blessings of his Guru, he was able to realize Brahmam. The rest of the song seems to be a description of this experience with God, it gives bliss, removes the effects of karma, is pure and whole, removes desire and earthly connections.

The newborn (Sri Muthuswamy Dikshithar) brought him luck too. Ramaswami Dikshitar was invited to give concerts at prestigious gatherings. The Tanjore king bestowed honors on him as befitting his status and dignity. The honor of organizing and streamlining the playing of Nagaswaram and other musical instruments at the Tiruvarur temple for the daily services, festivals and processions, was given to Ramaswami Dikshitar and he admirably carried out the task. These procedures are being followed even now at the Tiruvarur temple.

It is true that our children give us good luck or better luck. At the very least, once they are with us, our life changes for the better, and there is a much better reason to live!

Music Player Daemon

This is to deploy a HP Mini D1000 series (model 1030NR) netbook PC as a music server.
1. Downloaded the Voyage MPD Live CD linux image from the Voyage site
2. Downloaded Win 32 Disk Imager from here to my main Windows computer
3. On my main Windows computer, ran Win 32 Disk Imager and copied the iso to a USB flash drive (need to select * in the file type selection drop down in Win 32 Disk Imager file open dialog window).
4. Booted the netbook from the USB flash drive prepared in the previous step
5. Installed Voyage Linux with MPD following the Live CD installation instructions on the Voyage site (linked above).
6. Logged in as root
7. Changed the root password. For all subsequent configuration steps remember to run command remountrw before attempting to update files etc on the netbook.
8. Added ftp.us.debian.org to /etc/apt/sources.list file
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian squeeze main contrib non-free
9. Connected the netbook to a router using an ethernet cable
10. Ran command apt-get update
11. Installed the firmware-b43-lpphy-installer as required for the Broadcom wi-fi card on this netbook (See this page)
12. Updated /etc/network/interfaces for a static ip. Made sure non-required entries were commented out using a # for the very first column:

13. Set up static ip for netbook on the router and restart the netbook
14. Useful commands while setting up wireless: iwconfig, ifconfig, dmesg
15. Connected USB HDD drive containing the music
16. Determined the device name using the fdisk -l command
17. Added this line to /etc/apt/sources.list:
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian sid main
18. Ran apt-get update followed by installing package ntfs-config (now connected over wireless! all done while logged in as root!)
19. Edited /etc/fstab by adding this line to mount the USB HDD:
device name tab mount point directory tab ntfs-3g tab defaults tab 0 tab 0
20. Created the mount directory
21. Create a user account for mpd and add it to the audio group
22. Configure mpd as per guidance here.
23. Run command aplay -L to determine sound card properties (as shown here)
24: Edit /etc/mpd.conf as follows to force use of the Musical Fidelity V-Link always:

25. Be sure to configure a port # in the mpd.conf, you need it for the client
26. Install mpod on iphone and point it to the netbook IP and port #!
27. Needed to do this to stabilize the wifi connection which was dropping every few minutes:

echo "options b43 pio=1 qos=0" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/b43.conf

The explanation is that the QOS setting depends on the processor, for some it has to be 1:
QOS on --> Intel Core Duo, Intel Atom
QOS off --> Intel Core Solo, Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3/i5/i7, and AMD
Setting qos=0 seems to help, even though the netbook is Intel Atom. Without the setting, the connection breaks within 5 minutes. It "calls the CRDA to update the world regulatory settings" and successfully gets the information, but then drops the connection. With the setting, it is more stable. When this happens, if I do a ifdown wlan0 and then ifup wlan0 the connection is reestablished.
28. Use Putty to ssh to the netbook.
29. Tweak mpd settings (see here). Disabled the mixer completely. Doubled the values for ax_command_list_size and max_output_buffer_size
That's it!

Update Oct 2014: Edited /etc/sysctl.conf. Uncommented the following line:

        net.ipv4.tcp_syncookies=1

How to Create a DVD-Audio Disc

These are the steps to create a DVD-Audio disk. DVD-Audio disks can be played only on DVD-Audio players. Many universal players can also play DVD-Audio disks. Currently no new DVD-Audio disks are being released. However high resolution music (sampled at 88.2 KHz or 96 KHz 24-bit) is available from http://www.hdtracks.com, and if you have a DVD-Audio player you can burn the files to a DVD-A disk and play them on your player. This sounds great! You can play them directly from your computer to your stereo, but you need to make sure all components properly pass through the digital stream. My current hardware does not, so this is the simplest solution for me!


Downloads:
1. Download DVD Author (not the core version) from:

2. Download CDTools, cygwin1.dll, and DLLs needed by mkisofs from:

Preparation:
1. Use only WAVs.
To convert FLACs start FLAC Frontend in Admin mode.
To convert WMAs:

Installation Steps:
1. Install Virtual Clone Drive, Flac, WMAL2PCM, and Foobar
2. Place the DLL from foo_input_dvda-0.4.1.zip in the foobar components folder.
3. Install DVDA Author. dvda-author-09.05-11.win32.installer.exe will create DVD Author directory:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\dvda-author-09.05"
4. Unzip the following into the same directory:
-- mkisofs.exe from cdrtools-3.00-win32-bin.zip
-- DLL from cygwin1.dll_1.7.6_.zip
-- All DLLs from dlls.zip


Creation of a dvd-a disk:
1. Create a DVD-a Processing Directory
2. Create two files: dvda-author.conf and sort.txt in the DVD-a Processing Directory

Musical musings

One of the big treats for me when I travel is to go to a music shop (or shops) at every city that I am in. No exception this time also, I got a lot of CDs from my last trip and spent a few hours importing them into iTunes. This is really worth it, for example now I know I have three versions of "Brochevarevare". Exporting the karnatic music "recently added" play list from iTunes, this is what I got in 2008:

I have already quickly sampled some of the songs in all the CDs. I have found new (to me) gems by Shyama Sastri and Muthuswamy Deekshidar. I really cannot adequately express the intense musical, emotional, and bhakti high I am getting from these songs. Right now, I have discovered these keerthanas and listening to them at least twice every day:

Ranganayakam sung by D K Pattammal: I was unaware that D K Pattammal was one of the women trinity or the matriarchs of karnatic music. What a voice! Subbulakshmi has that ethereal CNC machine sculptured perfect rendition. MLV has a most beautiful light voice which carries you aloft on waves of bliss. DK Pattammal's voice is so pleasant to listen to, clear as a bell, very homely, deeply expressive emotionally. I found that this keerthana is one of the Srirangam Pancharatna Krithis of Muthuswami Dikshidar, the most famous one being Rangapura Vihara. Indeed it has similar sahityam:

The Adi Tala mridangam beat is captivating, and DKP's voice is evocative, wistful, and yearning for Sri Ranganayaka.

Mayamma sung by K V Narayanaswamy: Shyama Sastri's music has been compared to a sweet kadali-phalam (banana) which easily disperses sweetness into your mouth without your having to work hard for it. His musical expressions are the most complex (listen to the Swarajatis!) but the most emotionally and intellectually pleasing. The sahitya in this song is so simple, but so great, I love it.

Mayamma ani nenu pilichite, matlada ravemi? Idi nyayamena Sri Meenakshamma? Ninnu vina, vere dikkevarunnaru?

Rough translation: I call you, my mother, but you do not come and talk with me. Is this just, mother Sri Meenakshi? Other than you, who else can I go to?

I like the part in italics where it goes "nammiti nammiti nammiti":

Devi Brova sung by K V Narayanaswamy: This Shyama Sastry song was intense and stunning when I heard it at about 9:30 PM. It is charming where K V Narayanaswamy goes an octave lower when the sahitya is "da" in "ni dasuda" and "aa" in "bimbadari":

I appreciate that Shyama Sastry entreats the mother to come "ati vegame" = very quickly.

Among the other CDs I got, on the Hyderabad Brothers CD I am enjoying Brochevarevare so much. These guys are really good at Thyagaraja keerthanas. The version of Sri Saraswati on U Srinivas' Sangeet Sartaj is simply great. I don't know if you heard it, it is on many Music Today CDs. I have BMK Thillanas and MS Mela Raga Malika Chakra on tape but bought them again on CD for the better quality.

This system provides basic mixing and PA functions. The sound can be recorded from the output of the mixer. Overall high quality sound is achieved at reasonable cost. A wireless microphone is included with the packaged PA system which includes mixer, amplifier, speakers, speaker stands, speaker cables. System 2
Much more flexibility and quality is achieved in this system. Two studio grade condenser microphones capture main voices and instruments with extremely high quality. A separate mixer is utilized to keep the sound noise free by utilizing high grade microphone preamps. The mixer allows plugging in 6 microphones and mix it down to two channels for recording. A separate power amp then conveys sound to the speakers. The power amp and speakers are PA grade, but the mikes and mixer are studio grade. Therefore extremely high quality recordings can be made to a computer or tape recorder. The CAD KBM412 microphone will capture tabla and mridangam with excellent low frequency extension.
